Changes in the Level of Free Fatty Acid in Rat Serum During Starvation

Abstract
Changes in the level of rat serum free fatty acid during fasting were observed. The albino rats weighing approximately 200g were killed by cutting the the carotid vein at just before fasting, 12,24, and 36 hours after fasting, and then 12 hours after refeeding. The blood sample was obtained to determine the level of free fatty acid (FFA) by the method of Laurell-TAC colorimetric.
The normal serum FFA level at the fed state was 0.146+0.023mEq/1. After fasting, the level was rapidly increased 6-fold at 12-hour fasting compared with normal value followed by a gradual increase until 36th hours, and then, the elevated FFA level declined to the normal level at 12 hours following refeeding. The result indicates that serum FFA level is very changeable with nutritional state.
